Most of what goes wrong with schuco doors installation — in the folding-sliding category especially — happens before the doors arrive on site. It is decided at the survey and at the preparation of the opening. This is a plain checklist for anyone commissioning a schuco bifold doors installation on the ASS 70.HI system covered separately.

1. Survey and opening preparation

The opening has to be square, plumb and level. Small deviations that would go unnoticed on a fixed window make a multi-sash folder feel heavy at the outer leaf. A responsible supplier surveys on site rather than working solely from architect's drawings.

2. Choosing among schuco bifold doors suppliers

Ask any prospective installer for two or three recent references on the same system, ideally within the wider region — Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City, Hertford, Buntingford and Letchworth Garden City are all served by a handful of firms but their track records on this specific product are not identical.

3. Installation itself

The frame has to be squared and packed correctly, and the running gear and hinges then need to be finely adjusted. This is the stage that decides whether the doors will still run smoothly in three years' time or begin to drop out of alignment after the first winter.

4. Handover

At handover, check every sash for even engagement, test the shootbolts on the head and threshold, and inspect the threshold gasket carefully. Threshold detail is the hardest thing to remedy retrospectively without disturbing the finished floor.

Editor's note. 5EC, based in Stevenage, runs a bifold showroom in Hertfordshire and installs regularly in Buntingford — visiting a live example before committing tends to save awkward conversations later.

For readers researching options locally, the bifold showroom in Hertfordshire and 5EC's Buntingford projects are both worth reviewing — both are handled by 5EC, a Stevenage-based authorised supplier working across Hertfordshire.
